Lucía y el sexo

May 18th, 2008 · No Comments

Lucía y el sexo (Sex and Lucia) is a 2001 film by acclaimed international director Julio Medem. It stars Paz Vega as Lucia, Tristán Ulloa as Lorenzo, Najwa Nimri as Elena, and Daniel Freire as Carlos/Antonio; with Elena Anaya in a minor role as Belén.

Lucía y el sexo is a coming of age story in which the main character’s (Lucia) sexuality is awaken. Lucia is a waitress in Madrid who recently lost her boyfriend, Lorenzo, whose a writer. She decides to leave Madrid for a small Mediterranean island; once on the island she meets with Elena, who also went to the island to start a new life, and she also meets Carlos; a mysterious man. While on the island Lucia starts to re-discover her sexuality, and re-live her tremulous past relationship with Lorenzo.

Julio Medem’s talent as a director and writer is exhibited wonderfully in this film. He uses extremely vivid colors, and captures the soul and tranquility of the Mediterranean island, yet the rapid and dark shots in Madrid portray the darker side of the story. This film will definitely make the viewer think as it shifts between reality and fiction; it is sometimes hard to tell which story is real, which makes the film even more intriguing. Paz Vega is simply wonderful as the aroused Venus; mixing sexuality with innocence. But the real acting gem in this film is Tristán Ulloa as Lorenzo, he plays the role of a depressed writer whose secret is his ultimate destruction very well.

This is a must see film, and is currently out on DVD.

Padre Nuestro: A Film by Christopher Zalla

May 17th, 2008 · No Comments

Padre Nuestro also known as Sangre de mi sangre (Blood of my blood) is a limited release film by Christopher Zalla. The film stars Jesús Ochoa as Diego, Armando Hernández as Juan, Jorge Adrián Espíndola as Pedro, and Paola Mendoza as Magda.

The story is about the plight of an innocent Mexican boy (Pedro) in search of his father (Diego) in the Big Apple. Unfortunately, his fortune is bad from the start; as his innocent and trust worthy nature gets the best of him, and his identity is stolen by another street smart boy (Juan) in search of his own “American dream.” Upon arriving in the Big Apple, and dropped off in Brooklyn, alone and scared, he meets up with Magda, a junkie. Will Pedro find his father, and catch the impostor, or will fate deal him with an unforeseen twist?

The film moves along a good pace, and is pack with suspension. The script is written with heavy usage of Mexican slang, and the story itself takes a unique view on the immigration issue (Hint: Opening Scene). It should not just be considered a film about “immigration” because truthfully it is not; the main characters just happen to be immigrants in search of something. The film is really a human story that explores family relationships, hardship, redemption, and what humans are capable of doing in order to survive. The film was shot in Brooklyn, and mainly around Williamsburg.

As of May 16, 2008 it can be seen in theaters: limited release.
